Housing

Housing is a critical social determinant of health because it provides the foundation for individual and community well-being. When people have access to safe, stable, and affordable housing, they are better able to meet their basic needs, maintain physical and mental health, and participate fully in their communities.

Priority # 3: Affordable Housing

Housing that is unaffordable, overcrowded, unsafe, or unstable can lead to increased stress, anxiety, chronic health conditions, and social isolation. Households struggling with high housing costs often have less money available for nutritious food, healthcare, transportation, and other essentials that support healthy living. Affordable housing also contributes to stronger communities by promoting social connections, economic stability, and equitable access to education, employment, and healthcare services. As a result, ensuring access to affordable housing is not only a housing issue but also a key strategy for improving health outcomes and reducing health inequities.

 Oceanside Non-Market Housing Table

The purpose of the Action Table is to work collaboratively to develop recommendations for strategies and actions designed to achieve greater housing supply, affordability and diversity and accommodate a broad range of affordable and non-market housing needs now and into the future for the municipalities of Parksville and Qualicum Beach and Areas E, F, G and H of the Regional District of Nanaimo.

We are grateful to work in the traditional, unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw’naw’as and Qualicum First Nations who have lived here and cared for these lands and waterways since
time immemorial. We respectfully honour the traditions and teachings that are shared with us while we walk together with First Nations, Metis and Inuit relatives who live here.
